Let’s get you published!
Editing is going to look slightly different for each client, depending on your goals, but there is a general road map you can follow.
If you’ve just finished your book, let me be the first to congratulate you!! From here, you should settle into a second draft where you work on cleaning up rough edges from the first. This can include dialogue, adjectives — again, it’s different for every author. This may take more than one draft.
Once this is done, some authors choose to work with an editor on a developmental edit. My developmental edits focus on (a) genre standards, (b) commerciality, and (c) the building blocks of your story: your conflict, your tension, your resolution, etc. Some authors will choose to take developmental notes from an alpha reader period instead, which can be hit or miss; these are not readers within the industry, and the quality of their remarks may vary.
From there, you will restructure or rewrite as you wish, and the next step would be a line edit. This is where I’m looking at HOW you’re writing, not WHAT you’re writing about. It’s about refining your narrative voice. Do you have phrasing habits that are repetitive? Can we strengthen adjectives or sentence structure? Does your writing convey the weight and meaning you need it to?
When every single word is written and every character is exactly as you want them to be, then you are ready for a copy edit. This is going to include a deep read of every character and every space on the page to make sure it’s grammatically correct and that everything (text messages, em dashes, etc.) is standardised. From there, you will either begin to query for traditional publishing—or you will format your file for self-publication to ready it for e-readers and/or print, in which case you will need a final proofread when your file is 100% ready.
If you’re not sure which step is right for you, check the flow chart below:
